How to use an AMC to manage portfolios

Customizable Investment Strategies

Operational Framework

Client Investments via AMC’s

Customizable Investment Strategies

  1. AMCs provide asset managers with the flexibility to implement tailored investment strategies for their clients. These strategies could include equities, bonds, derivatives, or alternative assets.
  2. The manager has discretion to make active decisions to optimize performance based on market conditions.

Operational Framework

  1. The AMC issuer (usually a bank or financial institution) handles the issuance, legal setup, and administrative functions.
  2. The asset manager acts as the portfolio manager for the AMC, making day-to-day investment decisions.
  3. The performance of the AMC reflects the value of the underlying actively managed portfolio.

Client Investments via AMC’s

  1. Clients can invest directly in the AMC, which serves as a vehicle for accessing the asset manager's strategy.
  2. The AMC is often listed or tradeable, providing clients with liquidity compared to traditional bespoke portfolios.

Flexibility in Underlying Assets

Regulatory Simplicity

Access to a Broader Client Base

  1. AMCs can be distributed to multiple clients, making it easier for asset managers to scale their strategies.
  2. High-net-worth individuals, family offices, or institutional investors can access sophisticated strategies without requiring a full managed account.

Transparency and Customization

  1. Investors can track the performance of the AMC transparently.
  2. Asset managers can design AMCs around specific themes (e.g., ESG, technology, real estate).

Cost-Effectiveness

AMCs provide an alternative to traditional fund structures (like mutual funds or hedge funds), which can be costlier and require more extensive regulatory compliance.

Flexibility in Underlying Assets

Asset managers can include assets that may not traditionally be part of retail funds, such as niche derivatives, alternative investments, or thematic strategies.

Regulatory Simplicity

Since AMCs are structured products, they often require less regulatory overhead compared to launching a fund.

Omnibus Accounts

Efficient Trade Execution

Cost Reduction

Simplified Administration

Access to Pooled Investments

Flexibility in Asset Allocation

Confidentiality and Anonymity

Efficient Trade Execution

  1. Asset managers execute trades for all clients as a single bulk transaction in the omnibus account, reducing administrative complexity.
  2. Post-trade, the manager allocates the transactions internally among individual clients based on their respective portfolios.

Cost Reduction

By pooling transactions, asset managers save on transaction costs, such as brokerage fees, which might otherwise be higher for individual trades.

Simplified Administration

Asset managers can handle various clients' assets under one account instead of opening and managing separate accounts for each client with external parties like brokers or custodians.

Access to Pooled Investments

  1. An omnibus account allows asset managers to invest in certain instruments or markets that may require minimum thresholds (e.g., institutional share classes, private placements).
  2. Smaller clients benefit from pooled resources and shared access to such opportunities.
k i

Flexibility in Asset Allocation

  1. Asset managers can dynamically adjust allocations within the omnibus account without initiating separate trades for each client.
  2. This is particularly useful for strategies involving frequent rebalancing or tactical asset allocation.
k i

Confidentiality and Anonymity

Individual client details are not disclosed to third parties (e.g., brokers or exchanges). Only the omnibus account holder (asset manager) is identified, enhancing privacy.
